Who We Are
United Booksellers of San Francisco (UBSF) is a coalition of San Francisco bookstores, publishing professionals, and people dedicated to upholding the city's standard of cultural excellence by preserving and protecting our rich and diverse literary resources---bookstores---and the intellectual and artistic communities that spring up around them.
San Francisco is in a period of unprecedented growth and transition. Small business closures and evictions are at an all time high while corporations and developers flourish. We believe our bookstores are an essential part of the city's cosmopolitan character, that we contribute to the cultural landscape, and are part of San Francisco's heritage as a world renowned destination for free thought and ideas. As such, we must promote and protect our businesses as vital resources and valuable community treasures.
What We Do
We meet at Adobe Bookshop and Alley Cat Books to discuss the ways and means independent booksellers intend to stay in business and to share information. We serve on outside committees which contribute toward shaping the policies that will help us thrive in these dramatic times. We organize and sponsor community-oriented and inclusive literary readings, fundraisers, book drives, and other cultural events in the name of promoting literature and literacy at our bookstores and offsite throughout The City.
In a region that has long been at the forefront of arts and technology, we see every reason why our bookstores should join the movements to sustain life, liberty, cultural creativity, and freedom of thought and expression in the City of San Francisco.
