A PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT FROM OUR NEWEST UBSF MEMBER STORE,
DOG EARED BOOKS CASTRO!
For Immediate Release:
March 16, 2016
Dog Eared Books Announces Second Location: Dog Eared Castro Opens in May, Gala Opening Event June 20.
We at Dog Eared Books are thrilled to announce we’ll be opening a satellite store at 489 Castro Street this coming May, 2016! Housed in the space formerly occupied by A Different Light Books, Dog Eared Castro arrives just in time to fill the void created by the sad closure of Books Inc. on Market Street, the neighborhood’s only bookstore. Like our original location at 20th and Valencia, our Castro location will sell new, used, and discount books, along with stationery, posters, cards, and maps. As a neighborhood-oriented business, we intend to stock both a wide selection of locally-based writers and LGBTQIA titles, along with classics, best sellers, and off-beat books we wish were best sellers. The store will also maintain a full calendar of readings, book groups, release parties, and other adventurous literary events.
“The Castro is one of the few neighborhoods in America you can honestly call both trend-setting and uniquely historical. As such it deserves not just a good book shop, but a great book shop," says proprietor Kate Rosenberger. “We plan to work very hard to see the Castro gets what it deserves."
Since opening our doors in 1992, Dog Eared has dedicated itself to serving San Francisco’s culturally diverse and creative communities. Despite the advent of on-line shopping and "e-books," readers have responded enthusiastically to our traditional brick-and-mortar style bookselling. We hope Castro residents will celebrate the return of a bookstore to the neighborhood's main drag, a fun, friendly spot where people from all walks of life can find something to read, someone to talk with, or simply hang out and commune with the world of books.
We’ll be announcing details about our June 20 Gala Opening soon, so stay tuned!

San Francisco Poet Laureate Alejandro Murguía calls the 24th Street Corridor/Calle 24 “Bookstore Row,” where the coalition of stores—Adobe Books, Alley Cat Books, and Modern Times Bookstore Collective—all deliver unique attributes to a neighborhood already rich in history and culture. Yet given the changes in the Mission and citywide, independent booksellers, authors, and artists remain besieged by displacement. Tonight we celebrate what bookstores bring to our neighborhoods. Hosted by Alejandro Murguía, with Kate Rosenberger and Denise Sullivan. Featuring Jason De León, Kelly Dessaint, Susana Huerta, Michael Koch, Baruch Porras-Hernandez, Kate Schatz, Kim Shuck, Miriam Klein Stahl, and Katie Tomzynski. Music by Cambiowashere, Penelope Houston, Christine Shields, and Bob Forrest. Proceeds to benefit United Booksellers and Litquake.
